Tender Leaves and Capacity Growth

Tender Leaves and Capacity Growth
I simply can't describe this as one project. It was a series of 14 projects my team accomplished in about a year. We added nearly 150 million pounds per year of capacity, representing nearly a 25% increase! Amplifying that improvement is the knowledge that these were our fastest growing products and those with the greatest margin.

We added new production lines. We modified existing lines with new equipment. And some of those new lines we modified again (as a planned second phase).

The projects covered 10 lines in three states about as far apart as you could wish: Chicago, California and Georgia. Some of them were relatively straight-forward machinery replacement - faster packaging machines. Some of them were design and installation of new lines using new technologies. And about 20 million of those pounds came the old fashioned way, through productivity improvements without capital.

The group of Project Managers I managed kept all of these balls in the air. They developed the projects, kept them on track, and were ultimately successful in achieving the gain.

Why am I so proud of this? This was our first full year together for an entirely new team. Using principles of Project Management found in PMBOK, we were creating our project management tools as we needed them, all while teaching our organization what good project management can accomplish.
