This “prototype” line was designed and installed to test equipment, processes and techniques that could automate what was previously a mechanized, but manually controlled operation. The line proved to be capable of producing 60% more throughput with about half as many bodies as a traditional line. The control of blend proportion was dramatically improved, opening opportunities for further cost savings as the cost of ingredients shift.
This line included the first robotic case packing in our business. A largely automatic bin dumper was installed (getting the last 2-3 heads of lettuce out of the bin was problematic). Automated weight belts at multiple points, automatic drying, automatic palletizing and integrated line control rounded out the project.
Many of the concepts proved in this project have been utilized in other new lines.
