Network Administrator

Network Administrator
This facility had a Novell network and grew to 50 workstations and a client-server database running SQL (SQLBase).  It began as a small LAN for a maintenance department and grew throughout the plant, including a fiber-optic bus between buildings.

I assisted the part-time network administrator from the time I arrived at the facility; doing more because I knew more.  When he left I became the network administrator as a collateral duty, and served for several years until we grew enough to support a full-time network administrator.

I learned the network from a consultant who went on to create the largest ISP in the Orlando area, and the fourth largest ISP in the state.  With his help I upgraded the network hardware and software, added a sophisticated client-server SQL database and application and moved all office applications to a central server.  I also added metering software to maintain license compliance.  The combination of server-based applications and metering software allowed us to decrease our annual software costs dramatically.
