It was Thanksgiving, and we went to see the birds. Our family was visiting relatives in Tampa, Florida and a trip to Busch Gardens to see their famous Macaw and Parrot show seemed like just the thing.
Back then, you walked by a glass wall in the brewery to get to the “real attractions.” There it was, an infinite flow of cans conveyed into the room, being filled, sealed and flowing back out of the room. It was like a slithering snake that had no head and no tail. My family had to retrench, to retrieve me, to continue on to see the birds.
I trace my interest in engineering back to that display, through courses at one of the top engineering schools in the nation and eventually to a similar room, filled with another endless supply of cans. Only this time, it was orange juice.
I have a bachelor degree in chemistry, post-baccalaureate work in nuclear engineering, and a lifetime in food and beverage process industries. I have done process engineering, engineering controls and project engineering. I have designed and built fluid flow and heat transfer systems for citrus juice, control schemes for evaporation and cleaning systems, and integrated wastewater handling systems that even automated the regulatory reports.
I have had the good fortune to work with a large number of different processes, learning from each one. These have been as diverse as orange juice, pet food, chocolate, frozen dinners, ice cream, and processed salad.
