Leadership and Management Experience

Leadership and Management Experience
Leadership is forming a team, setting a goal, enabling them to meet and exceed their goal, applauding their progress and rewarding their results.  I guess I began to realize this as a teen, teaching other Boy Scouts how to swim, canoe and sail.
It sounds a lot like coaching or teaching.  At one time, this is even what the “management” books said.  Of course, then others said you could lead in only “one-minute.”  Even Ken Blanchard emphasized setting goals and praising work in his one-minute encounters.
The U.S. Naval Academy honed many leadership techniques, and inspired us with history of great Naval leadership.  They emphasized honor and integrity alongside capability.  Much more than science and engineering studies, this is what sets apart an Academy education.
As a junior officer running the reactor plant on submarines, my team needed to trust my abilities.  Much more so, I needed to trust theirs.
These are time-honored traits I continue to use with my direct reports.  They are equally effective for informal groups and project-based teams.
