How do you protect your new WEB site from an unscrupulous designer or host?
How do you protect your new WEB site from an honest designer or host who goes out of business?
You protect your web site much as you protect your family, your business or your organization:
you protect your good name, and
you protect your possessions.
Protecting your name
The best way to protect your internet name is to register your own domain name. It looks like www.yourname.com. While there is a cost of $35/year (the first two years are paid up front), this becomes a name you own.
Now that you own a name, you can take it places. If your host goes out of business, it is an administrative matter and only a few days to transfer your name to another host. If you get aggravated with your host, you can move your domain name in a way your viewers never know you moved.
Compare this with using a subdomain, or sub-folder. These are similar techniques of using someone else's domain name coupled with a way to identify you. They look like www.myname.com/yourname or www.yourname.myname.com. In addition to being longer to type, if myname goes out of business, no one will find you under that listing again. Besides, it is also longer to type!
Why would anyone use a subdomain or subfolder? Because it is usually free! But $35/year is a small price to pay for the comfort and transportability of your own name.
By the way, make sure the Internic registration includes you either as owner or administrative contact. That way you won't have to go through the 'unscrupuous host' to have your name transfered.
